NORMAN — Earnest Martin Newton, 94, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014, in Hot Springs, Ark. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Hillcrest Mausoleum in Ardmore, with Pastor Jerry Rhoades officiating.
Earnest was born on April 17, 1919, in Greenville, Texas, to Charlie Newton and Ella Mae (Monk) Newton. Earnest married Miss Winona Mae Cheves on Jan. 7, 1951, in Rockwell, Texas. She preceded him in death on Jan. 7, 2007.
Earnest was a painter for most of his life. The most important thing in his life was his family. He will be remembered for his woodworking, golfing and fishing.
He retired in Dallas and then moved to Norman, where he and his wife were active members of Faith Assembly of God church. He moved to Houston for two years to be with his daughter and then moved to Hot Springs, Ark., in 2009.
Earnest was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Diggs and husband Bob of Hot Springs, Ark.; grandson, Ron Diggs and wife Cindy of Norman; two great-grandchildren, Austin Diggs and Alexis Diggs, both of Norman; two sisters-in-law, Quin Reece of Oklahoma City and Betty Wood of Norman; two nephews, Don Brewster of Georgetown, Texas, and Fred Williams of Dallas; and two nieces, Margie Lewis of Dallas and Gayle Horne of Broken Arrow.
