Wanda Jean Hicks

NORMAN — Wanda Jean Hicks, 73, of Wanette, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at the Purcell Municipal Hospital. She was born in Norman on Sept. 11, 1939, the baby of four children born to James Hubert Sterling and Lottie Zola (McCalip) Sterling.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Wanette. Burial will follow at Wanette Cemetery.

She was raised in Cleveland County, primarily in Norman and Noble. She graduated from Noble High School. Wanda married the love of her life, a young man from Noble named Joe W. Hicks, on Nov. 15, 1957, in Norman. Together they raised three sons, Joe Bob, Larry and Brad. Wanda worked tirelessly as a homemaker, caring and providing for Joe and the boys.

She returned to school and obtained her LPN License. Wanda loved her work as a nurse, as she cared greatly for people — so much so, that she once again returned to school and obtained her RN License. Her greatest joy, however, was her family. She especially loved being a grandma and spoiling her grandchildren. She loved tending to her flowers and spending time with her little dog, Jessie.

Wanda loved the Lord and served faithfully in the First Baptist Church of Wanette. Over the years, she taught Sunday School and had been a chaplain’s assistant at Shawnee Unity Hospital. She will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Lottie Sterling; her sister, Barbara Durham; and a brother, James Sterling.

Wanda is survived by her husband, Joe of the home; her sons Joe Bob Hicks and wife Taffie of Shawnee, Larry Hicks and wife Pam of Noble and Brad Hicks and wife Laura of Wanette; her sister, Nevada Anderson of Norman; two adopted sons, Bruce Vaught and wife Eileen of Houston and Floyd Vaught of Huntsville, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and many other family and friends.

Arrangements are by Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Purcell.
