NORMAN — “I have seen what courage can be when there is no hope.” — May Sarton

Ann Corbett passed away Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at home in Norman after a 20-year ordeal with breast cancer. Ann was born July 7, 1941, in Lowell, Mass., to Harold and Mary King.

She was a 1959 graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Waltham, Mass. She attended Framingham State University in Framingham, Mass., on a scholarship that she earned in high school. Ann married high school classmate Lt. Joe Corbett, USAF, on Nov. 9, 1963.

After Joe’s military service, the couple moved to Norman to begin civilian life. Ann then began a 24-year career with the University of Oklahoma. She worked in several capacities at the university, but her most rewarding tenure was as an academic advisor to students in the School of Journalism.

To honor their mother’s legacy of service, her two sons funded the Ann Corbett Student Service Award, which recognizes an OU staff member who exhibits “above and beyond” dedication to serving students.

Ann is survived by her husband of 50 years; two sons, Joe of Oceanside, Calif., and Kevin of Lawrence, Kan.; sister, Patricia Pender of Midwest City; and three grandsons, Matthew, John and Michael.

The family would like to acknowledge the people of Loving Care Hospice who daily demonstrated that their name was not just a slogan. Also, Dr. Sherri Durica and staff, whose kindness made a difficult situation more tolerable. Lastly, dear family friends Teresa and Ted Baer, Marilyn Durbin and Pat Langley, whose moral support personified the very definition of friendship and love.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 266 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

A mass of Christian burial will be noon Friday at the St. Charles Borromeo Chapel in the St. Joseph Parish Life Center, 421 E. Acres St. in Norman. Interment will follow at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Norman.

Services are under the direction of John M. Ireland Funeral Home in Moore.
