NORMAN — Sondra Jean Hughes Miller passed away Sunday, Jan. 12, 2013, after a brief fight with cancer. She was born May 29, 1940, in Henryetta to Josephine Pearl Blackburn and Alvin Chester Hughes.
Sondra had many hobbies, including gardening, showing dogs and judging dog shows. Her favorite breed was the Belgian Tervuren. As a sweet friend of Sondra’s pointed out, those beloved dogs will be waiting for her at the rainbow bridge. Though she loved her Belgians, mom had a soft-spot for all animals. After her last Belgian died in 2009, she found her final K-9 companion at Second Chance. Loco, a Basenji mix, had been adopted twice and brought back because of her rambunctious nature. Mom knew that if she didn’t adopt her, Loco would spend the rest of her life in a shelter. Though mom rescued Loco, we believe Loco rescued mom, as well.
Sondra loved gardening and had an incredible green thumb. She would often buy plants and flowers that had been discounted because they were beyond saving and would bring them back to life. Her gardens have always been the subject of envy. Her daughter, Jenny, would often call her when she was shopping for flowers and ask her for advice or just talk with her about all the different flowers and plants the nurseries had.
She instilled in her kids a love for story through long conversations, reading books, old radio programs, and movies — she was a drive-in movie junkie.
Sondra is survived by her son, Chris Miller and his three children, Maci, Nathan and Dilan Miller; and daughter, Jenny Miller Newell and her husband Rick Newell and their three children, Kyla, Tyler and Corey Newell. She is also survived by her younger sister and best friend, Jeanie Black of Aurora, Colo.; her oldest sister, Alice Taylor of Henryetta; her youngest sister, Sharon Hughes of Tulsa; her brothers Mike Hughes of Verdigris and Kurt Myers of San Bernardino, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
