Richard ‘Dick’ Earl Howie

NORMAN — Richard Earl Howie, “Dick,” went to heaven Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, after fighting lung cancer. He was born April 3, 1930, in Ardmore, graduating from Ardmore High in 1948. He then entered the Air Force in 1951 and served for four years in England during the Korean War.

He married his sweetheart Verda Dene Saxon on Oct. 22, 1954, then attended the University of Arizona, graduating with a degree in electrical engineer with high distinction in 1961 and a member of Tau Beta Pi Honors Association.

He moved his family back to Oklahoma to work for Phillips Petroleum for two years, then back to his beloved Air Force to work at Tinker Air Force Base as an engineer for 29 years in Federal Civil Service.

He is survived by his wife, Verda Dene (Saxon) Howie of 59 years; sister Pat Hargis; brother Mike Howie; sons Vince and Marc Howie; daughter Patricia Hopkins; their spouses; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Loving husband, devoted father, loving grandfather, big brother, uncle, friend and hero to all, he will be missed dearly.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S. Kelly in Edmond. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Lung Association.
