NORMAN — Jimmy Bob Simpkins, 78, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012, in Norman.

At his request, there will be no memorial service. Arrangements are by Primrose Funeral Service.

Born Feb. 23, 1934, in Tulsa to Lella Alice and Roscoe Conklin Simpkins, he attended McKinley grade school and graduated from Norman High School in 1952.

During his high school years Jim worked at Greenleaf Grocery, a long-time downtown Norman landmark.

Jim served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in July 1955.

On January 28, 1960, he married Judy Sponsler. They were married 22 years and had two children, Bret Alan, and Tomi Lynn.

Jim held numerous positions, including working in civil engineering with the Oklahoma Air National Guard, before again serving his country full time in the OANG beginning in1968. He retired as a master sergeant in 1987 and began his travels, living in Florida, Belize and Alaska before returning to Norman.

Jim enjoyed OU football and basketball and watching Sam Bradford play pro football. Jim was known for his many practical jokes and it was always a challenge to return the favor.

After an accident in 2007, his quality of life was altered and he was lovingly cared for by his daughter, Tomi.

Jim remained cheerful and mischievous, and was ceaselessly grateful for those who continued to make his life more comfortable.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Lella May and Hazel, his brother, Forrest, and brother-in-law, Fred Sponsler.

He is survived by his children, son Bret Simpkins and wife Donna; daughter, Tomi Simpkins Walden; grandsons, Connor Walden, Cory Walden and Trevor Simpkins; a sister, Carol Simpkins Sponsler; friends, Kenny Walden and Judy Simpkins; and many nieces and nephews.
