Geneva Allean Wood

NORMAN — Geneva Allean Wood, 89, of Rivermont Independent Living Center in Norman, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, in her home.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Rivermont, 800 Canadian Trails Drive in Norman. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetaryat Springfield, Ill.

She was born Jan. 29, 1923, in Missouri and was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert M. Wood; father and stepmother, Chris and Ollie Kinnaman; mother and stepfather, Evia and Beckham Beard; a brother, Melvin Kinnaman, all of Springfield; daughter-in-law, Sharon Kay Wood of Kennedale, Texas, and sisters-in-law Mildred Spears of Lebanon, Mo., and Kathrine Canum of Springfield.

Survivors include two sons, Herbert Ralph Wood of Kennedale, Texas, and Richard W. Wood and his wife Kay of Whitney, Texas; a daughter, Sharon Ward and her husband Lance of Norman; seven grandchildren, Christine Waller and her husband John of Oklahoma City, Amy Henderson and her husband Randy of Whitney, Texas, Bobbie Sue Wren and her husband Jay of Sumter, S.C.; James Wood and his wife Tina of Austin, Texas; Chris Wood and his wife Tanya of Rockwall, Texas, Tamara Spaulding and her husband Mike of Norman and Herbert R. (Chipper) Wood II of Kennedale, Texas; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Melody Kinnaman, and brother-in-law, Freeman Wood, both of Springfield; double cousins Janetta Dehnbostel and Ralph Morgan, of Eureka, Ill.; a former daughter-in-law, Rose Wood, of Sumter, S.C.; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Geneva married Herb in 1940 when she was barely 17 but beautiful. He was tall, skinny, 21 and, some claim, looked like Frank Sinatra. Together, they would become greater than the sum of their best as individuals, yet were especially dependent on each other.

They lived most of their lives in Illinois, where Herb worked in coal mining near Mt. Carmel and Springfield. For family health reasons, they moved their young family to the drier climate of New Mexico in 1952, where Herb was in the uranium and potash industries at Grants and Artesia. They returned to Illinois in 1971. After retiring, they loved to travel in their motorhomes and enjoyed each other, RV friends and family in several states.

After her husband's death in 2002, Geneva lived in Texas and Oklahoma, then, in 2005, moved to Norman, where she found many good friends among her neighbors at Rivermont.
