Joseph ‘Ray’ Meyer

NORMAN — Joseph “Ray” Meyer, 90, went to be with the lord Monday April, 23, 2013.

Joseph Ray Meyer was born March 5, 1923. He was the oldest of seven children born in Norman to Joe Meyer and Helen (Tullius) Meyer.

A Wake was held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Havenbrook Funeral Home chapel, 3401 Havenbrook St. in Norman.

Ray attended Corn School through the eighth grade, where he helped on the family farm until he established Meyer Pump Service in 1943. He worked alongside his brothers Bill and Carol Meyer until his retirement.

On Jan. 13, 1945, he married Essie McHughes, of Norman. They were married for 50 years until her death in November 1995. They had five children together.

Ray was a member of the Moose Lodge, Golden Agers and Norman Nite Campers and was an avid fisherman and gardener. He enjoyed a rich and wonderful life. He loved to travel and he loved the great outdoors.

His engaging stories and great laugh will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Ray was blessed with a life well lived and well loved, and we all will miss him greatly.

Ray also “greatly” treasured his life-long friendship with his in-laws, the McHughes, as they were “all” so very dear to his heart.

Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Essie; a son, Jerry Wayne Meyer; great-grandson, Tristan Wyatt Meyer; his parents; sisters Donna Marie Lambert and Mary Lou Pomering; and one brother, Bill Meyer.

Ray is survived by son, Lynn Meyer and his wife Patsy, son, Bruce Meyer and wife Twilia, daughter-in-law, Kathy, daughters Donna Meyer and Denise Meyer, all of Norman; grandchildren Joe Meyer, Brandon Meyer, Brian Meyer, Casey Peterson, Monica Schat, Blaine Meyer, Keith Meyer, Valerie Garrison of Texas and Jennifer Leen of San Francisco; two sisters, Evelyn Pomering of Texas and Delores Loeffelholz of Norman; one brother, Carol Meyer of Norman; and many nieces and nephews.
