NORMAN — Helen Louise (Affsprung) Mantooth, 87, formally of Norman, passed away Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at SUN Home Hospice Care Center in Sunbury, Pa.

She was born June 12, 1926, in Mt. Ranier, Md., the daughter of Jesse and Vida (Jones) O’Hara. After working for the U.S. government during World War II, she attended college and earned a bachelor’s degree in library science.

In 1950, she married Harold E. Affsprung, a WWII veteran, and later a professor of chemistry at the University of Oklahoma. From 1964 to 1965, together with their two sons, they spent a sabbatical year living in Vienna and traveling Europe. Harold died in 1967. She was later married to Paul Mantooth, who also preceded her in death.

During the 49 years that she lived in Norman, Helen raised two sons, cared with great devotion for aging relatives, was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church and was an active member of the community. More recently, she had moved to Pennsylvania to be near family.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Eric and Elizabeth Affsprung of Lewisburg, Pa., and Bruce Affsprung and Daisy Leung of Salem, Ore. She has two grandchildren, Joseph and Daniel Affsprung of Lewisburg.

A family graveside service will be hosted at the Norman IOOF cemetery.
