Walter Lee Harker

NORMAN — Walter Lee Harker, 88, of Norman, passed away on Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, in Norman. He was born on Aug. 14, 1925, in Dewey to Mr. Lester and Zella Mae (Johnson) Harker. Walter grew up in Dewey during the depression and graduated from Dewey High School in 1934.

In 1941, at the age of 16, he along with his younger brother, Clyde Harker, drove a model “A” car from Hannibal, Mo. to Portland, Ore. to work in the Kaiser Ship Yards where he had decided to enlist in the U.S. Army.

Walter retired from the U.S. Army in Feb. 1965 as a master sergeant first class E7 and served during World War II in the Philippine Islands and Germany. He also served during the Korean War. He was a true unsung hero that fought courageously.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Organizations. Walter retired from Tinker Air Force Base as a supervisor building jet engines and later retired from Burns International Security.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 47 years, Verline; daughter, Sandra Meeks; and brother, Clyde Harker.

He is survived by his sons, Walter Lee Harker Jr. of Norman, Walter Laine Stensen of Copenhagen, Denmark, Rudolph Stensen and Johnes Stensen both of Estenberg, Denmark; daughter, Judy Nye of California; grandsons, Adam Davis and Matthew Davis both of Norman; granddaughters, Lacy Davis of Norman and Felicia Davis of Stigler; great-grandchildren, Kaydance Davis, Paige Davis, Ryland Davis, McKenzie Davis, Dalton Taylor Harker, Christian David Harker and Ashlie Lee Harker; and son in law, Tommy Davis.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sunset Memorial Park in Norman. Arrangements are entrusted to Primrose Funeral Service, primrosefuneralservice.com.
