NORMAN — Charles Alvie Rettig, 81, born Sept. 12, 1932, to Frank and Mildred Rettig in Engram Ridge, Mo., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, at his home in Norman. Charles was married to the late Ann Carlene Rettig on March 16, 1932.

Charles honorably retired from the United States Army as a chief warrant officer with 21-plus years of service. His time included serving in the Korean War and three tours in Vietnam. He earned multiple Silver Stars, a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, among many other medals and ribbons. He enjoyed spending time with his family and pets and talking with everyone he met.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Ann Carlene Rettig; his parents, Frank and Mildred Rettig; and a sister, Marion Frances Rettig.

He is survived by his four sons, the Rev. Charles R. Rettig and his wife Jenny of Holdenville, Ronald Rettig and his wife Deborah of Keller, Texas, Larry Rettig of Norman and Dennis Rettig and his wife Patricia of Norman; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Imogene Rettig Talley of Hayti, Mo., and Ellen Joyce Rettig James of Jackson, Mo.; and a brother, Donald Ray Rettig of Hayti, Mo.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons Randy Rettig of Grapevine, Texas, James Rettig of Norman, Dustin Rettig of Norman, Joshua Rettig of Fort Worth, Texas, Derek Rettig, presently stationed in Afghanistan, Jeff Stark of Newcastle, Jay Sullivan of Fort Worth, Texas, and Travis Talley of Taylor, Texas.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with family receiving friends from 2 to 4 p.m.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday in Havenbrook Funeral Home chapel, 3401 Havenbrook St. in Norman, with interment following in Sunset Memorial Park in Norman.

Arrangements for Charles and his family were placed in the care of the Vice family at Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman.
