Col. Robert Clark Armstrong

NORMAN — Col. Robert Clark Armstrong, 76, of Norman, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 24, 2013, in Norman. Robert was born March 19, 1937, in Jacksonville, Texas, the son of Robert Curtis and Cleonna Christine (Smith) Armstrong.

Graveside services with full military honors for Col. Armstrong will be 2 p.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, 2301 E. Indian Hills Road in Norman, with Rev. Bruce Ingram officiating.

While attending Oklahoma State University in 1957, after graduating from Duncan High School, Robert enlisted in the 120th Combat Engineers, 45th Infantry Division of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. He married the love of his life, Miss Nancy Jane Petrie, on June 21, 1958, in Duncan.

Commissioned a second lieutenant in 1962, Robert received both his fixed and rotary wings at Ft. Rucker, Ala. in the mid-1960s. A soldier, aviator and leader, Robert was employed by the Oklahoma Army National Guard, serving in units located in Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Okmulgee. He was commander of the unit in Norman in the 1970s and served as chief of staff in the Army National Guard before becoming United States property and fiscal officer (USPFO) before retiring in 1997.

His love of the guard has a legacy at the 45th Infantry Division Museum in Oklahoma City, where he was influential in obtaining a number of their impressive static displays of period military equipment.

Robert received both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from Oklahoma State University while living in Norman. He very much enjoyed the Bedlam game in 2011.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
