NORMAN — Dee Lloyd Newell, 89, died in the early morning hours Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, after a brief illness.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Baptist Church, 711 E. Federal in Shawnee.
Dee was born to J.B. and Grace Mae (Goin) Newell on May 18, 1923, in Depew, moving to Shawnee as a young child, where — other than a brief move to Midwest City from 1958-61 — he resided until his death. He attended Shawnee public schools and was a 1942 graduate of Shawnee High School.
He married Lois Evelyn Legg on March 31, 1950. She preceded him in death in June 2006. They were blessed with three daughters during their union: Sharon Kaye, born in 1957, followed by Martha Ann in 1959 and Sandra Dee in 1963. He also was a proud grandparent to granddaughters Jordan Schornick and Micah Bussey.
Dee began attending Liberty Baptist Church as an infant and, until his death, was the longest-living member of the church. His life revolved around church activities and his family. He worked with his brother, Vernon, in his family business, Southwestern Roofing and Sheet Metal in Oklahoma City, retiring at age 62. Dee truly loved working in his large vegetable garden and mowing his two-acre yard on his riding lawnmower. He had continued to live on his own and was mowing the large “lawn” through October. For many years, he and his wife, Lois, were ardent supporters of OBU basketball and attended all home games. He loved watching sports on TV and was a huge Dallas Cowboys fan. As his health declined in recent years, he looked forward to weekly outings with his daughter, Sandie, to the Wednesday night church fellowship dinner at Liberty and services that followed.
In addition to wife Lois, he was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; brothers Glenn Newell and Vernon Newell and his wife Rowena; sisters Geneva Hammons and her husband Cecil, Bernice Wright and Elena Harris and husband Hayden; nephew, Dewayne Harris; and niece, Reba Butler.
