Laura Jane Simpson

NORMAN — Laura Jane Simpson departed this world surrounded by her family, at the age of 79, on Nov. 17, 2012. Jane died at home from cancer. She was born in 1932 to Clarence (Jack) and Martha LuVicie Hopkins at Dibble.

There will be a memorial service for Jane at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church in Norman.

Her faith was always strong, but Jane loved this world. Naturally happy, nurturing, witty and openhearted, she was a blessing in the life of all who knew her. She was active in the Christian Women Fellowship of First Christian Church. Enjoying the fellowship of many of her friends while making quilts for the homeless and Totes of Love for foster children was one of her greatest pleasures. Very artistic, she was a longtime member of the World Organization of China Painters, Purcell China Painter Club and the Porcelain Artists of Norman.

During the 1970s, Jane owned and worked at Jane’s Emporium, a clothing and fabric store in Blanchard.

After retirement, Jane and Dennis did extensive traveling both in the U.S.A. and many other countries. Not only did she see delightful sights, she shopped extra suitcases full. They enjoyed gardening together and their many church activities. Thanksgiving and Christmas found an abundance of friends and family in their home for meals and parties.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Elzie (who died in childhood) and Carl Hopkins; and sisters Lois Robinson and Helen York.

Jane is survived by her husband, Dennis; daughters Laura Williams and husband Chuck of Tucson, Ariz., Londa Lamey and husband David of Blanchard and Leesa Lewis and husband Dee, also of Blanchard; son, Mike Pierson and wife Myra of Tuttle; stepsons Mike Simpson of University City, Mo., and Daryl Simpson and wife Jennifer of Chesterfield, Mo.; stepdaughter, Cynthia Simpson of Wentsville, Mo.; 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Harry Hopkins and wife Nina of Norman; her favorite niece, Elizabeth Simpson, who she grew up with; along with numerous other cousins, nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, Jane requested gifts be made to the First Christian Church’s Totes of Love project for foster children.
