A virtual tie for presidency The Norman Transcript Early on, the nation's top Democrats warned that too much fussing and fighting between their presidential hopefuls could push voters to choose other candidates. Recent polls show that prophesy may be coming true.
U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, the presumptive GOP nominee, would be in a virtual tie with either of the Democrat frontrunners if the election were held this month. An Associated Press-Ipsos poll showed Sen. McCain to have erased the 10-point lead enjoyed by U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois in a virtual matchup in late February. It may be the bounce enjoyed by Sen. McCain's clinching the GOP nomination but it also could be from voters weary of the sniping between Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-New York, and Sen. Obama. Both Ms. Clinton and Mr. Obama have suffered along the campaign trail. Sen. Clinton has been targeted for surviving an alleged sniper attack that didn't ever happen and Sen. Obama is catching flak for his former pastor's caustic sermons.
