NORMAN — Wednesday’s groundbreaking for the $5 million infrastructure project at the University North Park Corporate Center and Advanced Manufacturing Center brings a new employment dimension to Norman.

When completed, the needed infrasture will support a business park and manufacturing center with a goal of bringing quality jobs to Norman. Envisioned are six multi-story office buildings. The UNP Corporate Center and Advanced Manufacturing Center is expected to be home to about 2,000 jobs.

The project is being paid for with a $2.5 million federal grant and $2.5 million from the TIF fund generated by taxes in University North Park.

Mayor Cindy Rosenthal shared the groundbreaking podium with U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe. Although she and the state’s senior senator don’t seem to be politically aligned, they do share a commonality in their duties as mayor. Sen. Inhofe was formerly mayor of Tulsa.

Cities, Mayor Rosenthal said, are where economic development really takes place. Municipalities can help prime economic engines that create employment and entrepreneurship opportunities that are competitive with other regions.
