NORMAN — The triumphant Oklahoma Sooner football team returned to Norman on Friday afternoon to a host of well-wishers waiting for them on campus. Since the bowl announcements were made last month, most of us had little hopes that the 10-2 Sooners could knock off Alabama in Thursday night’s Sugar Bowl.
But after the game, we all seemed to have found the faith. (Even the ESPN announcers who picked Alabama to win were pitching softballs with the coach and players). The Sooners proved they could fight like underdogs even though Coach Bob Stoops said it never entered their game planning.
Football watchers say the 45-31 win was likely the second-biggest victory in Bob Stoops’ OU coaching career, lagging behind the national championship in 2000. It put him in the lone, lofty position of having coached victories in the Sugar, Rose, Orange and Fiesta Bowls in the BCS era.
Both Oklahoma and Alabama shared strong traditions and passionate fans. Thursday’s game was one for the ages.
