NORMAN — Volunteers are getting out their gloves and sanding tools for a March 29 makeover of the Kidspace playground at Norman’s Reaves Park, at Jenkins Avenue and Constitution Avenue. The 15-year-old wood and steel structure is beginning to show its age.
It won’t rival the blitz build in March 1999 when more than 3,000 volunteers built the 13,000-square-foot playground in less than a week, but it’s needed just as much.
The city’s parks and recreation department has maintained the structure over the years, but it needs a makeover before the spring play season. City parks director Jud Foster said sanding and resealing of the wood is the biggest task. Volunteer workers also will replace wood chips.
Volunteers need to have and bring their own sanding tools, extension cords and other tools. If the work is not completed Saturday, volunteers will return March 30. Rain dates are April 19 or May 17.
