Fire warnings continue

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Cleveland County isn’t under a burn ban, but that could change soon.

Only five Oklahoma counties — three in the southwest, one in the east and one in the north — have such restrictions.

But the state’s forestry service warns that the danger of wildfires will be high across the state throughout the weekend. Unless we get some substantial rain, the countryside remains a tinderbox.

Warmer temperatures, gusty winds and low relative humidity also has led officials to declare a red flag warning for much of the state, and residents are encouraged to avoid outdoor burning until moisture returns to the state. Cleveland County firefighters battled blazes Tuesday afternoon and into the evening. High wind is firefighters’ worst enemy.
