Breaking the rules of the road

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

I have driven in almost all of the 50 united states and several foreign countries, but never have I seen so many drivers who flagrantly violate traffic laws as there are here in Norman.

Very few drivers here obey speed limits. Speed limits are established and posted for a good reason. Drive the speed limit anywhere in Norman, and almost all vehicles will pass you if they can or get right on your rear bumper if they cannot.

Drivers here seem to think that a stop sign means “stop only if there is traffic coming.”

And they apparently think that at a red light, it is OK to keep on going until opposing traffic makes it impossible to do so. If my light is green and traffic is still passing through the intersection in front of me, they have all “failed to stop for a red light.”

They do not seem to realize that when they turn left in front of you or pull out from a side street directly in front of you, causing you to brake forcefully to avoid hitting them, that they have “failed to yield right of way.”

One other point, a lot of drivers seem to think it is OK to park in a fire lane as long as they turn on their four-way flashers.
