NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
The Edmond Chamber of Commerce had to be the “silent partner” of Janet Barresi, Oklahoma State School Superintendent, on her poorly thought out plan to label Oklahoma’s public school systems by grading them. Or did some real estate marketing genius in Edmond come up with and sell this idea? These ideas are the only thing that makes sense. Nobody with the economic interests of the entire state of Oklahoma would have signed on to this idea ... only those with self interests.
Edmond received a grade of “A,” which is a coup for every land developer north of Oklahoma City. The OKC school system happened to receive an “F.”
Norman happened to received a “B.” The question begs to be asked: Who picked the criteria for this grading system? I wonder how many of them live in Edmond?
This leaves employers in Norman, like myself, trying to recruit employees to move here with a lot of explaining to do.
Here’s the bottom line: student performance is directly related to household income. When you have to work a part time job after school it leaves little time for home work. I had three kids graduate from the Norman Public School system, I would put those administrators, teachers and their education up against any one’s. It was the best!
Who is not the best is Oklahoma State School Superintendent Janet Barresi and her ill-conceived idea. It makes me wonder how many Edmond land developers contributed to her political campaign.
Not that any companies will want to move to Oklahoma after these report cards and the labels/impressions they create. But if a company does want to relocate in Oklahoma I bet their employees will want to buy a house in Edmond.
