NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
The people responsible for the recent government shutdown will continue with their efforts to fund and conduct this type of activity, which even affected veterans and children. We need to study past actions in this shutdown so we will know how to avoid anything like this again in the future.
Surveys show that the majority of Americans were against the shutdown; some Republican congress members have indicated they were against it. However, some members revealed this stand only after they saw the public reaction and failure of the shutdown.
The House Republican leadership spent a considerable amount of time in planning this action and used loopholes that had never been used before to insure a clean funding bill would not get through the House.
I do not think many American people realize the value of the lost time and cost by our legislators nor the planning and amount of money raised by right wing groups for this shutdown. Evidently they were able to buy a shutdown.
The recent government shutdown affected various areas of our whole country and the effect on veterans makes me very angry. I am a disabled Korean combat veteran and this action by our Congress is simply another example of their lack of concern for our country and our veterans who have served so honorably in our many foreign wars.
Another effect of the shutdown was the harm to the United States’ economy; Standard & Poor’s estimates this cost to be at least $24 billion.
We need to vote more carefully and for legislators that will spend more time getting the economy growing and creating more jobs rather than expending time and our money in such activities as shutting down the government to coerce changes in government programs that allow the rich to get richer.
