NORMAN — What happens under Capitol domes in Oklahoma City and Washington, D.C., is certainly important. But citizens’ day-to-day lives are impacted more by what happens at City Hall on Gray Street in Norman.

The government closest to the people may be the most thankless job in politics. (Few Members of Congress get called about trash pick-up, a pothole or stray dogs in the neighborhood).

Norman’s city council elections are held each year with odd-numbered wards up for grabs this year and even numbered ones up in 2014. The mayor’s post is up every three years.

The four incumbent council members — Ward 1 Roger Gallagher, Ward 3 Robert Castleberry, Ward 5 Dave Spaulding and Ward 7 Linda Lockett — have all announced they will run. For Mr. Castleberry, it will be his first time on the ballot since he was appointed to fill a vacancy in 2012. At least one of the incumbents has drawn an announced opponent.

Mayor Cindy Rosenthal has announced she will seek a third, three-year term. One other candidate, Tom Sherman, has announced plans to seek the position. There may be others out there.

The first step in the process begins Monday at the Cleveland County Election Board, 641 E. Robinson. The three-day filing period will end at 5 p.m. Wednesday and the election is scheduled for April 2. A runoff, if needed, will be May 14.

We applaud those citizens who are willing to stand up and put their names on the ballot. It’s a demanding job that requires a lot of study, listening, diplomacy and even a few prayers.
