Right move for Norman’s water future

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

All of us who live in Norman will benefit from the passage of the Lake Thunderbird Efficient Use Act, which passed in the last few hours of the congressional session that adjourned in December. The passage of the bill will enhance the security of Norman’s future water supply.

Representative Tom Cole worked hard to pass the bill through the House of Representatives earlier last year. In the Senate, the bill was held up by partisan differences over non-related legislation. Finally at the last minute, the logjam was broken through the joint efforts of Senator Jim Inhofe and Senator Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico.

Senator Bingaman, who was retiring from the Senate, made it one of his last acts as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources to work with Senator Inhofe to get the bill passed.

I know how hard Senator Inhofe and his staff, especially his Chief of Staff, Ryan Jackson, worked on the bill, because I received a phone call from Ryan Sunday evening when the bill was finally passed. I was also contacted by Senator Bingaman’s office late the same night.

I hope that my fellow Normanites will join me in thanking our Congressman, Tom Cole, and Senators Inhofe and Bingaman for their exceptional work to help secure the future of Norman.
