Active military will suffer

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — One of the casualties of the federal budget reduction is tuition assistance for active-duty military. OU officials say the summer and spring semesters will be when the crunch will hit hardest.

OU officials believe about 1,300 to 1,500 students may be affected if all tuition assistance ceases. Most of the students are involved in programs offered by the College of Continuing Education.

Students take courses at military installations around the world. OU often sends faculty members there to teach on back-to-back weekends. That could be in jeopardy if students don’t choose to enroll and pay for courses on their own.

It’s another example of choosing popular programs to make a point about federal spending. Budget items with constituencies are often the first to be cut.
