National parks are at risk

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

While 280 million people visit national parks each year, House Republicans propose drastic cuts that will make it impossible to maintain the system at the current operating level.

Since basic expenditures take up about 90 percent of the budget, very little is left for discretionary spending on educational programs, trail repairs and public relations.

The national park system was the milestone of President Theodore Roosevelt’s monumental conservation movement and has remained a symbol of pride for more than a century. Roosevelt considered the parks, the natural forest preserves and 51 wildlife refuges as a gift to future generations.

We cannot leave the future well-being of the environment to a bunch of insensitive political hacks who cannot see the forest for the trees.
