NORMAN — A local elected official alerted us to a scam going through some hotels. He was staying at a national chain hotel in New Orleans recently.
After checking in, he got a call in his room from someone asking for a credit card for “incidentals” that could be charged to his room in case he broke or stole something.
The caller knew his name, his room number and the planned length of his stay. He sensed something was wrong because he had already checked in with a credit card.
The “operator” said he needed to give out his credit card numbers over the telephone or be escorted out of the room. The caller gave up when it was obvious the guest wasn’t falling for it.
Either the hotel had an employee sharing the information with the potential thief or its computers had been hacked. Hotel officials apologized and said it was not the first time for such an incident.
