NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
The restraint of the Norman Police in response to the shooting on Flood Avenue Wednesday afternoon, March 6th, is unsettling. A man shot his gun at a fleeting car that was no threat to him. The bullets from his gun passed the full length of McKinley Elementary School where children were playing. Fortunately, none of the children darted into the street at that moment.
Norman Police Captain Easley was quoted in the March 7th Transcript, “Detectives will continue to investigate the matter.” He is quoted in the March 14th Oklahoma Daily, “We’re constrained by the law.”
“The fact is, unless we get a victim, the best we’re going to get on on the person who fired the gun is a misdemeanor offense like reckless conduct with a firearm.”
Is that all we can expect from our police department?
The letter in the March 15th Transcript is an eloquent statement of the problem with the handling of this incident.
