To be or not to be singular

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

To be (singular) or not to be?

Who gave sports’ announcers the grammatical license to refer to all teams as plural when some teams have a name that is singular, as the Thunder or the Heat? We know that a team is made up of several members but it is still a team, (singular).

For one who learned grammar in the thirties, it hurts my ears every time I hear, “the Thunder are.”

The weather forecasters refer to thunder quite a bit, but they never say, “the thunder are loud.”

Most families are made up of several members, but we never say, “My family are___,” but “My family is.___.”

Think it over! You are allowed to speak of both plural and singular named teams in the same sentence and use the correct verb choice!
