Still a good value

NORMAN — The spring is traditionally the time when college-bound high school seniors and their parents are narrowing down higher education choices.

Visits are done. Acceptance letters are in the mail.

Now, it’s time to look at costs.

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine recently ranked three Oklahoma universities for their ability to provide a top-notch education at a relatively low cost.

The University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University in Stillwater and the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha made the list this year.

OU was ranked 70th best for in-state students, OSU was 93rd and USAO was 91st. OU also recently was listed similarly in a Princeton Review publication.

Kiplinger cited OU’s relatively high ACT scores, good faculty to student ratio, and academic standing of the incoming freshmen class.

The magazine said OU costs about $18,000 per year but when need-based aid and scholarships are figured, it averages $12,000 per year.
