Yes for millage; Sherrer and Nashert our picks

NORMAN — Registered voters who lives in the Moore-Norman Technology Center district and those in Norman’s school board seat No. 3 will have an election Tuesday.

For the MNTC ballot, board members are asking district patrons to increase the annual millage from four to five mills, providing about $1.7 million in property tax revenue to the center. A separate question would make the one mill increase permanent until voters say differently.

The school wants the money for facility remodeling, construction, purchasing equipment and possibly teacher salaries. We believe a “yes” vote is in order. It’s a way that the district can continue to invest in the technology center without having to approve more expensive bond issues down the road to replace facilities and equipment.

For the MNTC school board seat being vacated by Doris Wedge, we believe Andy Sherrer to be the most qualified for the post. Mr. Sherrer formerly worked for MNTC before returning to banking. His knowledge of the school, the district and the needs of local businesses will serve him well on the board. All district voters (77 of 83 precincts) can cast ballots for this seat.

In Norman, 13 precincts will vote for the school board seat vacated by Darry Stacy, who represents District 2 on the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners. We believe Cindy Nashert is the best choice for that position. She has demonstrated a breadth of interests, is a small business owner and has had leadership positions in several civic organizations.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. In-person, absentee voting continues Monday at the election board, 641 E. Robinson St. More information is available at 366-0210.
