The article in the May 22 edition of The Transcript on Page 8, “The cost of clean,” is way off base. The article emphasizes increased cost of electrical power if coal-powered plants are shut down.
My objection is that the article makes no mention of the savings expected as a result of reduced emissions of mercury and other pollutants and resultant improved general health. Benefits are expected to exceed costs — indeed, that is why closure of coal plants is being proposed.
