Conference talks change

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — The shop talk in past years at the Big 12 Media Days in Dallas has been on conference realignment. That’s hardly touched on these days as the Big 12 settles into its new normal.

Fans are beginning to visit the conference’s newest members — West Virginia and TCU — at their home venues. Coaches at the 10 schools that make up the conference met with sports reporters in Dallas.

Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby, a relative newcomer to the conference, said some changes may be needed in terms of schools’ governance by the NCAA.

He suggested the NCAA be broken into federations of similar schools in terms of size and financial resources.

He said there about 75 schools that win 90 percent of all championships. Many of the other schools are trying to compete but just don’t have the resources.

“We’ve spent a lot of time talking with NCAA leadership about these issues, and I think we will make progress,” Bowslby told Transcript writer John Shinn. “But I don’t think we can continue to do what we’ve done and expect that we’re going to get a different result.”
