More gun permits issued

NORMAN — The number of persons applying for concealed weapon permits has risen steadily over the past three years. In the first six months of 2013, nearly 37,000 license applications have been received, compared to 26,000 in all of 2011.

Oklahoma Watch reports few applications are denied. That makes sense, since someone with a previous conviction or a mental health issue is not eligible for a permit.

In 2012, the state law was changed to allow persons to openly carry handguns. Police say that has not been a problem.

The spike in applications is not only in Oklahoma. Some officials point to the Connecticut school shooting and other mass shooting incidents as the trigger that caused individuals to apply for a carry permit.
