NORMAN — Moore City Council members took time to thank more of the city’s first responders this week. Police officers who responded to the May 20 devastation of Plaza Towers Elementary School got a standing ovation from the council meeting audience.
Two weeks ago, the city’s firefighters were honored. Last month, Moore teachers who helped save children’s lives were recognized.
We think that spotlight ought to be extended to county sheriff’s deputies, firefighters and police from other cities, hospital staff and even Oklahoma National Guard troops called in to help that fateful May afternoon.
Sadly, this is not the first time Moore has dealt with rebuilding. Some of the same police officers and firefighters that picked through the rubble in 1999 also helped with rescue efforts this year.
As stories emerge of the first-responders that afternoon, it makes us more appreciative of the public servants that put the safety of others ahead of their own. A simple ‘Thank you’ seems hollow. The ones we’ve thanked have responded, ‘Just doing my job.’
