FEMA deadline Aug. 19

NORMAN — One of the continual problems with disaster recovery is the number of Oklahomans who don’t want to register for any kind of government assistance. Often, it’s a matter of pride or the feeling that others are more needy.

Sometimes, a property owner doesn’t want government meddling and prefers to go it alone or rely on family, friends, church members or others to help rebuild their lives.

In any event, the deadline to apply for FEMA disaster assistance for the May tornadoes that raked the state is Aug. 19. Cleveland County was easily the hardest hit county.

The state and federal government’s contribution to disaster assistance has now grown to more than $50 million. Property owners, businesses and renters are all eligible for assistance for rental costs, repairs, replacement items, medical costs and other storm-related expenses.

Rebuilding and repair loans are available as well as direct assistance. Often, homeowners and businesses wait to see what they will receive in insurance proceeds before filing, but that may be after the deadline.
