Celebration of the law

NORMAN — Cleveland County attorneys will join with their colleagues throughout the state in celebration of Law Day this week. It’s generally May 1, but local lawyers and judges will sponsor a presentation on the evolution of voting rights at 7 tonight at the courthouse.

They also will join in the statewide “Ask a Lawyer” program Thursday evening. Callers can get free legal advice from 7 to 8 p.m. by calling 360-7555.

Law Day nationwide began during the Cold War and was something of a response to the Soviet Union’s May Day celebration of military strength. Wewoka attorney Hicks Epton, the 1953 Oklahoma Bar Association president, proposed the idea of celebrating the rule of law.

It took hold and President Eisenhower proclaimed a national Law Day in 1958. Celebrations throughout the nation call attention to the rule of law.

On Thursday, OETA will air its “Ask a Lawyer” television program, which this year spotlights water rights, human trafficking, disaster assistance and the state’s Oklahoma Supreme Court scandal.
