NORMAN — We knew it was only a matter of time before the Republican primary in the U.S. Senate race turned ugly.
Less than a month before the June 24 primary election, a group backing state Rep. T.W. Shannon’s bid for higher office has taken issue with some of Congressman James Lankford’s votes.
In broadcast ads, Lankford is targeted for voting for President Obama’s budget and voting to raise the national debt ceiling.
Before this week, the only thing we really knew about the two candidates from their television advertisements is that they were religious men who despised the president’s health care initiative.
The new ads came from Oklahomans for a Conservative Future, a shadow group that shields donor names and is not directly associated with Shannon. The group has spent about $900,000 to elect Shannon.
Heretofore both Republican front runners had stayed on the high road. It’s a safe bet Lankford or some groups backing his Senate race have negative ads ready to go.
