NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
I am perplexed. Many people are concerned that expanding background checks for gun ownership will infringe on Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens. If you are law-abiding citizens, how do background checks prevent you from buying guns?
Why do law-abiding citizens need assault rifles and high-capacity ammunition clips? I have asked this question many times, and the only response I get is an all-knowing smile. Alright, all-knowing-ones, why? (Are you aware that Westside Wal-Mart sells both?)
Ninety percent of Americans are in favor of expanded background checks. Yet our national representatives and senators are not representing us. Has the GOP not learned anything? They were so surprised they lost the presidential election. One reason is that the majority of women voted Democratic. Hello, GOP, most women favor stricter gun-control laws.
The NRA has a powerful lobby but 90percent of Americans is a stronger lobby. As part of the 90 percent, I am also keeping a score card on Oklahoma’s representatives.
However, I am positive we need expanded background checks and a ban on assault rifles and high-capacity ammunition clips. No, I’m not a Pollyanna. I realize criminals will still get their hands on all kinds of guns. Criminals make meth, so should we just make it legal? Robbing banks is illegal, but criminals continue to do it. Should we take that law off the books? It’s the logic the NRA is using for not restricting gun ownership. No, I don’t want to infringe on the Second Amendment. My father, grandfather and uncles were all gun owners. I’m just trying to make our world safer.
If you think arming school teachers is the panacea to school violence, read Rheta Grimsley Johnson’s article on Readin’, Writin’ and Packin’ (Norman Transcript 4/10/13). As a retired school teacher, I couldn’t have said it better.
Maybe the 90% of Americans for stricter gun laws should join the NRA and add our voice of reason.
