Change is difficult to embrace. We want things just the way they are or the way that best suits our needs.
In NZ’s letter to the editor, she seems to want Lindsey to be for fast cars — door to store and everything else — get out of the way, and that includes bicyclists. The news may have escaped NZ, but there are many reasons more people are cycling.
It’s actually a growing trend. Cyclists want drivers to share the road. They are just like people on four wheels; they want safe streets to travel.
Knowing they are vulnerable, the hope is that cars recognize the need for safety when traveling near bicycles. A cyclist is largely at the mercy of drivers whom we trust will be observant and kind.
In response to SR’s letter, are you really proposing OU move from Norman? What would this town look like without the University of Oklahoma?
Moving OU to another community is definitely one way to clear the traffic on Lindsey.
Keep in mind that the university and the adjoining neighborhood are much older than Lindsey west of Berry. West Lindsey is the new kid on the block, so to speak.
Perhaps the street design should reflect the older neighborhood rather than mirroring Interstate 35.
With regard to Lindsey being a section line, well, that is just it — a line on a map to be developed over time into something that works for an entire community.
Does a street only exist to move as many cars as possible as fast as possible from one point to another? That seems like a sterile highway.
I think city streets have heart and personality and are places for people to gather, shop, visit and enjoy life.
Can Lindsey be a street for people as well as cars? I hope so. It’s in my neighborhood.
