Keeping FAA towers open

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Now that Congress has passed legislation to temporarily keep the FAA towers fully staffed and keep contract towers open, the traveling public needs to keep up the pressure to find a permanent solution.

It never made sense for the FAA to take its sequestration cut out of tower operations. It seemed like a textbook way to infuriate most citizen travelers.

The bill transferred up to $253 million in funding from the Airport Improvement Program or other FAA acounts to keep controllers on the job through the end of September.

OU had announced earlier this year that it would fund the Westheimer Airport tower until the FAA funding was restored. It was one of five towers in Oklahoma that would have closed.
