Steady enrollment growth

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — When a tornado ripped through Moore this past spring, hundreds of families were uprooted from their homes.

Most of those homes were in the Moore school district, and surrounding areas thought their enrollment might increase.

That’s apparently not the case in Norman where district officials are seeing normal growth patterns. The district this week said preliminary counts show enrollment up 330 students.

More students will likely enroll after Labor Day. Official counts are delivered to the state Department of Education on Oct. 1. Normal growth in recent years has been between 150 and 450 students. Incremental growth, and not large up and down swings, are conducive to good logistics.

In recent years, the district has added Reagan Elementary School and Truman Primary School to alleviate crowding.

Board members are looking long-range at what the district’s building needs will be in the next decade.
