NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
Someone decided to dump a little dog on East Tecumseh Road on Christmas Eve or a few days after. If you can remember, we have had some horribly cold, freezing days and nights. This little dog had to live in this weather.
Neighbors from 24th Avenue Northeast to 60th Avenue Northeast have supplied the little one with food.
Some who didn’t have animals even went to the store and bought him food. He was so terrified of people that we couldn’t get within five or six feet of him. Some of you might have witnessed people getting out of their cars to try and get him out of the cold.
He started slipping through our front gate and sitting on our front porch. We had two little dogs that were getting attached to him, and I think he was quite fond of them.
I called animal control and they said, “Yes, they would come pick him up,” only when we caught him. I tried to explain we couldn’t get near him because he must have had been mistreated.
I asked for a cage we could borrow, put a tarp over it, put a blanket in there with food and we would check it every five or six hours. “No, they don’t loan the cages during cold weather,” this is the policy.
Well, the previous owner who dumped him and the city for not letting us borrow a trap can feel good now. On Thursday afternoon, someone hit the little thing, and I hope and pray it was an accident.
At least now he is in Dog Heaven and is warm. One nice lady near 60th Avenue called to let us know he was gone and she was going to bury him.
At least we can all feel good as neighbors to know we made the last weeks halfway bearable for our little friend. I hope if anyone is thinking of dumping a dog, please do not leave him for the coyotes, wolves and weather elements. Call the Norman Animal Shelter.
