NORMAN — Dash-cam videos, with those grainy images showing a police officer and someone he or she has pulled over, would become public records under legislation filed in the Oklahoma state Senate.

State Sen. David Holt, R-Oklahoma City, thinks the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s current exemption to the Open Records Act shouldn’t be allowed to stand. We agree.

Local law enforcement tapes are subject to release, so why should the Oklahoma Highway Patrol be exempt? It’s as much a bill to protect law enforcement as it is to challenge their practices.

Motorists who claim they are treated unfairly during a traffic stop should have access to the recording. Officers who are accused of misbehavior also should have the ability to show what actually happened in a traffic stop.
