NORMAN — The topic of wayfinding signs will come before the Norman City Council soon. Chamber of Commerce members approved the concept this week with a side discussion about Tecumseh Road versus Tecumseh Town.
It seems more than a few visitors have taken the State Highway 9 Eastbound exit off I-35 with the Tecumseh destination instead of the Tecumseh Road exit. One businessman said some guests ended up out near Lake Thunderbird instead of near his home on East Tecumseh Road.
A physician said she’s had patients who are coming from south I-35 take the SH-9 Tecumseh exit instead of continuing north to the Tecumseh Road exit that serves her office.
The timing to make a change in the interstate signage is right. With the interstate work, it’s time to clear up the confusion. How about changing the Tecumseh reference on the SH-9 signs to Little Axe or Lake Thunderbird or even Pink?
While the highway department is thinking about this, we could still use a sign for travelers arriving at Will Rogers World Airport pointing the way to Norman. That’s been a sticking point for many years. Perhaps some of the wayfinding money could be used to buy a billboard pointing the way south to Norman.
