NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
Last Sunday at church, I told a friend that I was considering a letter in response to Nadine Jewell’s talking points list about the Affordable Care Act. Now I thank Bill Logan for beating me to it and doing so quite nicely. (Also, loving thanks to Chuck Berry for writing “Maybellene” and performing it so well, back when music was really music, but that’s another letter for another day.)
Then I had a fun idea: For a month, the liberal talk show hosts on MSNBC — that’s all of their hosts — are required to do research and take the conservative side of all issues they discuss and vice versa for those on Fox.
This could be extended to letter writers, also. I’m off the hook since Nadine has already written the letter I would have been required to write, so just put my name on it. Now, Nadine, if she will play the game, has to write a letter pointing out the negatives about the Affordable Care Act.
Here’s a start: Obama promised he would not sign a bill that added even one dime to the national debt/deficit. Seems he did, though, with the PPACA.
After various accounting shenanigans (not a standard term used by CPAs but required in the accounting lexicon of Congress), the estimate for the bill was $940 billion (had to keep it under $1 trillion for appearance and sales sake). Mere months later, the estimate was raised to about $1.7 trillion.
And we all know the truth about government estimates. It’s like one of my former bosses used to say (jokingly?) about estimates I made: “Take the estimate, double it and add 50 percent.” We never got around to saying whether the added 50 percent was of the original estimate or of the doubled estimate. It makes a big difference.
And, Nadine, don’t forget the IPAB, aka future death panel.
Good luck, Nadine. I hope you don’t have any problems (blood pressure spikes, heart palpitations, etc.) requiring medical assistance from the Affordable Care Act.
