Pride and pitfall: OU wary of growing complacent between big games

“They’re very, very good and we have to bring our ‘A’ game because they’re going to bring theirs,” Nelson said. “So that’s why I say it’s the most important game of the season so far. But this is actually a conference game that we have to win in order to take that next step to try and win the Big 12 championship.”

Many OU teams have said things like that in the past, yet failed to deliver the weekly focus required to make it so.

Many teams — including former OU squads — have been susceptible to letdowns.

The Sooners will know what kind of team they are by Saturday night. Teams that put together great seasons take confidence from big wins and build on them. They don’t have suffer a letdwon becasue they just won a big game and the Texas game is less than two weeks away.

“Every year, we have have Texas in the same position, so we always have someone before and after them,” Stoops said. “Whereever they are doesn’t matter. Everything is on TCU, period.

“Around here, we’re expected to be beat everybody. You only beat everybody by being ready for everybody.”
