Scary moment with Colvin out

NORMAN — Oklahoma cornerback Aaron Colvin left the game early in the third quarter with a leg injury, and the same fate befell left tackle Tyrus Thompson in the final minutes.

Stoops did not have an update to give Saturday night, but Colvin did tweet that he was fine.

His injury forced sophomore Cortez Johnson into the game. He finished with three tackles and a pass breakup.

“That made it hard. It was scary. We miss him. We miss his leadership. We miss his presence,” OU defensive coordinator Mike Stoops said. “We missed a screen on third-and-12, where he’s going to make that play. Cortez was just soft and just didn’t recognize it like Aaron would have. So it was hard playing without him.”

Thompson appeared to suffer an ankle injury in the fourth quarter. OU moved Bronson Irwin, who had been splitting time with Nila Kasitati at right guard, to right tackle and Daryl Williams from right to left tackle after Thompson’s injury.

No 10: Mike Stoops still believes it wasn’t Tavon Austin that killed the Sooner defense last season. It was that the Mountaineers kept lining him up at running back with four other wide receivers on the field.

“They didn’t line up in 10 personnel (one running back and no tight ends) the whole game, and that tells you we’re changing people’s philosophy against us,” he said. “That’s the first thing I noticed. They weren’t going to let us get to the quarterback.”

OU had one sack, but defensive back Kass Everett forced a fumble that was recovered by defensive lineman Chuka Ndulue. The Sooners were credited with four quarterback pressures.

Been a long time: The Sooners’ 16 points marked their lowest point total in a home win since a 14-10 victory over Kansas in 1967. The last time it scored fewer than 14 and won a game was their 12-0 victory over Texas in 2004.
