OU moves up one in coaches’ poll

(Continued)

NORMAN —

He understands he has to limit the time he lowers his shoulder to pick up some extra yards.

“There is a big difference,” he said. “Last year with the package, I came in when Landry (Jones) was the main quarterback. I came in and my job was third and short and goal line, and that stuff was rough. I had to come in and lower my shoulder. Now, you see me out there on some of those runs, and I’ll slide. You don’t want to take any of those unnecessary hits.”

In the history books: Wide receiver Jaz Reynolds, who did not play last season due a suspension, delivered a breakout performance against the Golden Hurricane with four catches for 109 yards. His 82-yard catch on OU’s second possession was the longest play in the program’s history that failed to score a touchdown.

Like the scenario: One of the reasons OU agreed to move up its conference opener with West Virginia to the season’s second week was so it would not have two bye weeks in September and so it could have a week off before its non-conference showdown at No. 22 Notre Dame Sept. 28.

“To have two off weeks and just having two games wouldn’t have been very good,” OU coach Bob Stoops said. “I like how it’s set up now.”
