The Sooners blew a four-run lead in the eighth inning and suffered a 17-15 loss to the Jayhawks in the first game of a three-game series. “It was tough loss. Bottom line is it was a slugfest and they ended up scoring runs late that really hurt us,” OU coach Sunny Golloway said. OU (29-18-1, 6-12-1 Big 12) and Kansas (27-22, 6-13) combined for 30 hits, but the Jayhawks managed to bunch most of theirs together in the late innings. Michael Rocha, who was the third of four pitchers the Sooners used, took the loss. He entered in the eighth inning and gave up three runs on four hits. Buck Afenir hit a two-run single to score Casey Larson and John Allman to put Kansas ahead for good. Paul Smyth threw the final 12⁄3 innings to get the victory for Kansas. Spencer Selby went 2-for-5 and hit a grand slam home run in the fourth inning to lead the Sooners. Matt Harughty drove in three runs. But scoring runs wasn’t the problem. “We didn’t pitch well enough to win,” Golloway said “We have to come back and keep fighting in the next two games.”
